South Central, Newton Win, EHS, C'land Drops Losses In Softball

South Central ended this game in the fifth inning via the 10-run rule with a 13-1 victory over Cisne in high school softball action Wednesday.

The Cougars leaped into the fray with five runs in the first inning, then had four-run innings in the second and third.

Kaitlyn Swift led the Cougars in hitting with two singles and two RBI while Karli Holmes added a double and an RBI. Emily Rose chipped in with a single and two RBI. Taegan Webster, Abi Shuler and Noa Leerschool had a single and an RBI each.

Kinlee Thompson went five innings, allowing one run on four hits, no walks and striking out nine.

At Newton

Newton blanked Mattoon by a 10-0 count in five innings Wednesday.

Amelia Collins went all five innings on the mound, allowing one hit, one walk while striking out four.

Meanwhile, the Eagles finished with 12 hits led by Bailee Frichtl with two singles and a double, Camryn Martin with a double, triple and an RBI, Lexie Grove with two singles, a double and three RBI and Allie Stanley with a double and two RBI. Lilly Kessler added a single and drove in two runs.

Mattoon's lone hit came from Aylexis Otto with a single.

At Newton

At Salem

Effingham and Salem went the first three innings without scoring a run. But the Wildcats got unwound with four in the fourth and went on to blank the Hearts 7-0 Tuesday.

The Wildcat's pitcher, Breanna Thurman, held EHS in check, allowing only two hits, giving up one walk and striking out four.

Effingham's two hits were singles by Natalie Armstrong and Madi Kirk.

EHS also finished with three errors in the game.

At Greenup

Charleston edged out to a 2-0 first inning lead and went on to down Cumberland 14-1 in five innings Tuesday.

The Trojans finished with 13 hits.

Cumberland had five hits led by Ashley Tolen with two singles and Lib McGinnis with a double and an RBI.

In Wednesday action, Richland County was a 23-14 winner over the Pirates.

Cumberland held a 10-9 lead after five innings but Richland County came back with two in the sixth and 12 in the seventh for the victory.

The Pirates had 16 hits led by Kati Kingery with two singles and a double. Tolen with two singles and two RBI, Jade Carr with three singles and two RBI and Avery Donsbach with a double.
