ALBION — Effingham High School captured the championship of the Edwards County (Albion) Tournament during the weekend.
The Hearts beat Edwards County, 25-18, 21-25, 15-13 then downed Charleston 25-17, 23-25, 15-6. EHS won over Newton 25-21, 15-25, 15-13.
EHS claimed a 25-19, 19-25, 15-12 win over Norris City-Omaha Enfield and fell to Lawrenceville 25-22, 25-16.
Leading the Hearts were Camdyn Burgholzer with a total of 34 kills and 46 assists, Lena Gebben and Melia Wendling with six aces each, Kallie Phillips with 11 blocks and Macy Kirk with 49 digs.
Named to the All-Tournament Team were Camdyn Burgholzer, Mara Braun and Melia Wendling.

At Champaign
Teutopolis High School competed in the Champaign St. Thomas Moore Tournament during the weekend.
“We started the day playing really well,” said Teutopolis Coach Tim Mills. “We won both our pool matches, downed Leroy, 25-16, 25-14 and St Thomas Moore 26-24, 14-25, 15-10.
“And we didn’t play badly against Hartsburg-Emden. We fell short in that match 25-18, 25-20. But we seemed to run into a wall after that.
“The match against Cissna Park was awful. We really struggled with our serve receive. We gave up 11 aces in the two sets. That of course affected our offense as we hit .164 with nine hitting errors. You can’t give a good team 20 points over two sets and compete!
“Then we had to face St Thomas Moore for the second time on the day and we just had no energy. We split the first two sets and got down 12-4 in the third set.
“It could have ended there. Since we played our first match at 8am, we had left Teutopolis at 6am and had already played four pretty tough matches.
“But maybe the best part of the day was the finish to that last set. They rallied to tie the game at 13 and even though we eventually lost, the girls showed a lot of life against the host school in their own gym with our backs to the wall.”
The Wooden Shoes’ Kaylie Jordan was named to the All-tournament team.
Teutopolis will celebrate Senior Night against Cumberland tonight.
