Altamont High School played host to Pana in soccer action for the Indians’ final game of the regular season Wednesday.
“We also celebrated the wonderful seniors that have been the support beams and leaders for this club,” said Altamont Coach Eric Morales.
“The rain held off and the sun came out bright and shining to start the game. We came out of the gate and right away took it to the Pana keeper. Although we couldn’t get our shots to sink, we possessed the ball 90% of the first half only allowing Pana to cross the half twice.
“In the 13th minute of the game, Ashton Buchanan clicked the ball with his head right over to Calvin Bannister who quickly put the ball opposite corner on a beautiful play and we went up 1-0.
“The tribe continued to drive the ball with patience, looking for the right moves. With 28 seconds left in the half, Calvin was able to find a bouncing ball in the box that he poked right in going into the half 2-0. We gathered, chatted and came together as one at half.
“We came came out in the second half as a new team on a mission. Just minutes into the game, Calvin found Ashton on a beautiful pass to the back of the net going up 3-0. Two minutes after that goal, Calvin drove the ball down the sideline sending a beautiful cross in for Hudson Short on a gorgeous volley into the back of the net for a 4-0 lead.
“Ashton picked up a rebound out of the box and drove it in and chipped the defender and goalie for a nice goal, 5-0.
“On the kick-off, Preston Kroening dashed out to defend and managed to deflect the ball in his favor, drove it in and sent a rocket into the net for a 6-0 lead.
“After multiple attempts from Mason Suey on goal, in the 76th minute, Kaleb Overton sent a beauty from the left corner cross to find Mason for a beautiful head ball finish into the net to lead 7-0.
“As the game came to an end, Mason, on an attack, streaked the ball, and solo drove the ball in with seven seconds left and drilled the ball into the net ending the game 8-0 in favor of us.”
The Indians moved to 11-6-3 on the season and will take a small break to await the decision on who their opponent will be for our first game of regionals next Tuesday at Effingham High School.
“Thank you to all the seniors and their parents for all the work they put into the program over the last four years,” said Coach Morales. “It was much appreciated.”
