Excitement turned to disappointment late in Monday afternoon’s high school soccer match at Charleston High School for Altamont as the Indians fell 2-1.

Trailing 1-0 after 76-plus hard-fought minutes, the Indians drew level 1-1 when Calvin Bannister’s shot was blocked by the Trojans keeper only to have Bannister poke it right back in again for the game-tying goal with 3:43 remaining on the clock. Bannister’s goal broke Indians fans’ frustration, as the they had failed to capitalize on several chances on crosses into the penalty area.

“Charleston came roaring back, though, only to be turned away on several occasions,” said Altamont Coach Eric Morales. “As the clock dropped below a minute remaining, the Trojans broke through our midfield and were able to exploit a slip and fall by one Indians defender. That slip prevented the right defensive back from having his usual support from the center, and the Trojan forward’s shot found the net to make it 2-1 Charleston with a mere 48 seconds remaining. The waning moments of the match flew past and the hometown Trojans escaped with the win. Eli Barnes and Zeke Barnes split time in goal in goal for the us.

“Kaleb Overton and Hudson Short had strong performances in midfield, and Hayden Bridges anchored the defense for us as well fell to 10-6-3 on the season.”

Altamont returns home for Wednesday night’s Senior Night match against Pana.
