Hillsboro defeated Effingham St. Anthony 10–1 in high school soccer competition Wednesday.
” We were dealing with significant injuries in our defense, including two of our captains, which made it very difficult for us to match Hillsboro defensively,” said St. Anthony Coach Martin Reyes. “The defense gained a lot of experience and the team continued to compete despite the circumstances.
“Jackson LaSarge (FR) scored our lone goal on a penalty kick with approximately 11 minutes remaining.
“Our junior varsity team earned a 3–2 victory over Hillsboro. Levi Flowers (freshman) scored our first goal with an assist from Rucker Harris (freshman).
“Elijah Underbrink (freshman) added our second goal with an assist from Myra Christie (senior). Jackson LaSarge (freshman) scored the game-winning third goal.
“The team fought hard and came away with an exciting win. Devin Grubb (senior) was our goalkeeper and had some great saves.
“It was a challenging night for our varsity group, but I am proud of all players for their effort, resilience and earning our first victory of the season. We will continue to work, improve, and support one another as we move forward.”
St. Anthony’s next match is at St. Teresa High School Saturday.
