DIETERICH — Teutopolis edged out to a 4-2 opening inning lead then held off Dieterich for an 11-8 high school baseball victory Monday in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.
The Wooden Shoes struck with four runs in the first inning. Aiden Niemerg led off the frame by drawing a walk. He stole second and went to third on a wild pitch.
But Dieterich came back to get the next two outs before back-to-back walks to Michael Habing and Hadden Tebbe loaded the bases. Luke Niebrugge followed with a single, scoring a run and Teagan Pals then swept the bases clean with a triple and suddenly the Shoes held a 4-0 lead.
Dieterich came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Traden Kessler led off with a single and Bryce Bohnhoff singled. A ground out by Gavin Meinhart scored a run. An error produced the second run.
The Shoes scored again in the second to pull ahead 7-2. Bryce Niebrugge led off with a single, advanced on a wild pitch and came home on an error. Niemerg and Bennett Schumacher drew back-to-back walks. Eric Weidner then followed with a single, scoring both runners and the Shoes held a 7-2 lead.
Dieterich rallied again, this time with three runs in the third. With one out, Bohnhoff, Meinhart and Ben Schottman had back-to-back-back singles. Meinhart drove in a run with his single.
Mason Niemerg singled and Alex Schottman then drove in a second run with a single. Kaynen Hall also had a single, scoring a run and the Maroons had pulled within 7-5.
The Shoes’ Niemerg scored his third run of the contest in the fourth inning when he reached base on an error and stole second. He came home on a single by Weidner.
Dieterich tallied three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kessler was hit by a pitch. With one out, Meinhart and Schottman drew back-to-back walks. With two outs, Cooper Stortzum was hit by a pitch and a run scored. A single by Schottman scored two more runs and the Maroons tied the score at 8-8.
But the Shoes tallied three more runs in the fifth with two outs. Pals led off with a single. Niemerg doubled home Pals and Bennett Schumacher followed with a single scoring Niemerg and the Shoes led 11-8 and that’s where the scoring ended.
Derek Drees picked up the pitching win, going 1.2 innings, giving up two hits while striking out two. The Shoes finished with 12 hits.
