Effingham High School stayed in the game until the end but Mattoon pulled away late for a 4-3 baseball victory Wednesday.
The Green Wave edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead. Effingham came right back to tie the score in the second as Brayden Tucker singled home a run.
But Mattoon jumped back into the lead in the bottom of the second after drawing a walk and Effingham committed an error, each scoring a run.
EHS tied the game in the top of the sixth thanks to a triple by Tucker and a passed ball.
But the Green Wave came back with a run in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the victory.
Effingham was led by two doubles off the bat of Jude Traub and Tucker with a single, triple and two RBI.
Traub suffered the pitching loss. He went six innings, giving up four runs on six hits, walking four and striking out six.
Next up for Effingham is a game against Mattoon today.
