TEUTOPOLIS — It was a battle like it almost always is when Effingham and Teutopolis square off in high school baseball.
The two teams met Monday and the Hearts snatched a late lead to edge the Wooden Shoes, 10-9 in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.
EHS opened with a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, Brody Boehm reached on an error. Carter Braddy followed with a double. Westin Hayes hit a sacrifice fly that scored Boehm. Jude Traub followed with a single that scored Braddy.
The Hearts pushed the lead to 8-0 in the top of the second. With two outs, Wyatt Hayes singled. Andrew Wagoner followed with a single and Brody Boehm drew a walk to load the bases. Braddy then singled home two runners. We. Hayes was hit by a pitch. Traub then singled home another run and Brayden Tucker followed with a single that scored two runs and the Hearts were off and running.
Nolan Schumacher hit a solo homer in the second for T-town.
Teutopolis tallied four runs in the third to pull within 8-5. With one out, Andy Lustig and Davin Worman drew back-to-back walks. Aiden Niemerg then followed by drawing a third walk to load the bases. Jason Kreke singled home a run and a fielder’s choice on a ball hit by Austin Borries brought home a run. Niemerg scored on an error. Teagan Pals brought another run home with a single.
EHS went up and down in the third and had two runners on base in the fourth but couldn’t bring them home.
T-town then pushed into a 9-8 lead with four more runs in the fourth, all coming on walks.
Lustig led off with a walk and stole second. Worman followed by drawing a walk as did Niemerg. Kreke followed with a walk that scored a run. Borries then followed with another walk for an RBI. Five walks were issued in the inning producing four runs.
But the Hearts came back in the fifth to move ahead 10-9. With one out, Wyatt Hayes homered. Wagoner then singled followed by a single by Boehm. With two outs, Westin Hayes singled home the second run.
T-town came to bat in the sixth. With one out, Kreke singled and Borries followed with a double. But the Hearts got a strikeout for the second out. Pals drew a walk to load the bases. But a ground out ended the inning.
In the seventh, the first two batters struck out. But the Shoes put two runners on as Kreke hit a single and Niemerg was hit by a pitch. But the third out was racked up on a fly ball ending the game.
Effingham finished with 12 hits led by Westin Hayes with a home run and two RBI, Braddy with a single, double and two RBI, Traub with two singles and two RBI and Wyatt Hayes with two singles and an RBI, Andrew Wagoner with two singles and Tucker with a single and two RBI.
The Wooden Shoes were led by Schumacher with a home run and an RBI, Borries with a double and two RBI, Kreke with two singles and two RBI and Pals with a single and an RBI.
Westin Hayes picked up the pitching victory. He went 1.2 innings, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out four.
Effingham edged T-town 1-0 in eight innings in freshman/sophomore action.
Both teams had two hits each. Effingham was led by Dagg Thompson and Ian Kinkelaar with a single each.
T-town was led by Will Bushur and Derek Drees with a single each.
Thompson was the winner on the mound going 7.2 innings, giving up two hits, one walk and striking out seven.
