Gerald “Jerry” Aloysius Vogt, age 69, of Sigel, entered into eternal life on Saturday, October 10, 2026 at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his wife and children.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 15 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Sigel with burial to follow at St. Michael Cemetery. All are welcome to a celebration of life on Thursday, October 15, 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the small gym at St. Michael School. Memorial donations may be made to St. Michael School. Arrangements are in the care of Bauer Funeral Home, Effingham. Online condolences may be expressed at www.bauerfh.com.
Jerry was born on January 1, 1957, the son of Clarence Sr. and Dolores (Ruholl) Vogt. He married Susan Probst on July 23, 1983. Married for 43 years, they raised their 7 children in rural Sigel on their family farm, teaching them to work hard, love harder, and pray the hardest. Jerry gave much of his time serving on the leadership boards for MidAm, DHIA, and Cumberland County Farm Bureau. In addition to farming, Jerry took it upon himself to learn and study and passed the exam as an enrolled agent in early 2000. He worked for H&R Block until he retired in 2023.
If Jerry wasn’t working, he was likely spending time in prayer. Jerry was a lifelong parishioner of St. Michael the Archangel Parish, a member of the Knights of Columbus, involved in Effingham Area DeColores, Effingham Area Right to Life, and numerous prayer groups and Bible studies for over 40 years. Jerry’s faith was an example for all who met him and his love for Christ was his highest priority.
As he slowed down later in life, he was able to spend more time with his family, friends, card club, and camping club. He was able to travel more and became good friends with several couples who went on 2 pilgrimages, the Eucharistic Congress, and Fulton Sheen’s Beatification.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife Susan, children: Jerod (Theresa), Joseph, Jennifer (Thomas) Metz, Jenette (Carlos) Teran, Jacob, Justin, and Jenelle; grandchildren: Jerron, Jaclyn, Jamison, and Jordan Vogt, Lincoln, Hudson, and Madilynn Metz, and Lucas Teran; siblings: Ken (Marilyn), Joann (Bob) Bierman, Karen (Joe) Ruholl, Clarence Jr. (Martha), John (Jane), Ed (Michelle), and Jean (Dan) Beard; many in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
