James H. Carpenter, 86, of Greenup, passed away at 6:11 pm on Saturday October 3, 2026, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon.
Per James’ wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A private family burial will be in the Harmony Cemetery with Military Rites at a later date.
The Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup is assisting the family.
James was born on January 31, 1940, in Greenup, IL to Charles and Lydia (Underwood) Carpenter. He married Laura Ann Neidigh on September 5, 1962.
Survivors include his loving wife, Laura; sons Steve (Lisa Hittle) Carpenter and Eric (Rebecca) Carpenter; daughter Amy (Roy) Warner; grandchildren Austin Warner, Garrett Warner,
Kade Warner (fiancé Kaylan Finley), Gavyn (Kaleigh) Carpenter, Owen Carpenter, Morghan Carpenter, and Michael Carpenter; great grandchildren Elizabeth Warner, Jasper Carpenter, and Declan Carpenter. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Charles Carpenter and Harold Carpenter; and sister Barbara Darling.
James served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era from 1958 to 1962. He worked for Moore Business Forms in Charleston, Illinois, for 30 years and later
spent several years with Prudential Insurance. He enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, and cheering for the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Fighting Illini.
