Joy Frances Thomas, 86, formerly of Stewardson and Strasburg, Illinois, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2026, at Heartland Senior Living in Neoga.
She was born on October 15, 1939, in Stewardson, the daughter of Rolla and Ima (Gillespey) Brooks. Joy enjoyed gardening, cooking, decorating for the holidays, and feeding the hummingbirds.
These simple pleasures reflected her love of nature and the care she gave to the world around her. She took pride in the details of everyday life.
Joy is survived by her daughters, Robin (Roger) Shumard of Stewardson, Annie Friese of Stewardson, Jamie Thomas of Tuscola, and Janis Thomas of Mattoon; her son, Jodie Thomas of Savannah, Georgia; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-greatgrandchildren. Her family was a source of great pride and joy to her, and she treasured the many memories they shared over the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Candie Kessler; her sister, Joyce Bohn; her brother, Kenneth Hankins; and one grandchild.
Private family services will be held in Stewardson Cemetery. Memorials in Joy’s honor may be made to Stewardson-Strasburg Blessings in a Backpack and mailed to 302 W. Main St, Shelbyville, IL 62565.
