Jennifer Lynn Starwalt, age 45, of Kinmundy, Illinois, passed away Thursday night, August 6, 2026, at St. Louis University Hospital.
She was born January 12, 1981, in Olney, the daughter of Mark Eugene and Wanda Ellen (Jennings) Byers. She was united in marriage to Mark Anthony Starwalt on September 8, 2001, in Neoga. Together, they shared nearly 25 years of marriage, building a life and raising their children, Malachi and Mallory, while sharing in the joys, challenges, and everyday moments that made their family their own. Jennifer had a lifelong love for animals, the outdoors, and helping others. She earned an associate degree in agricultural science from Lake Land College and worked for many years in the agricultural community, including at F.S. Feed Store and, more recently, Valbert’s Feed Store. Her knowledge and experience with animals were something she freely shared, helping countless people care for their livestock and assisting numerous 4-H members with their animals and projects. She also volunteered with Full Armor Christian Academy FFA and was always willing to lend a hand wherever she was needed. Jennifer especially enjoyed riding horses and showing goats, traveling to more than six states to compete and participate in shows with her family. A true homesteader and hard worker, she took pride in doing and making as much as she could on her own. She loved grilling and smoking meat, working in her garden, and tending to her flowers. In recent years, she was especially happy to finally have the time to simply enjoy the flowers she had worked so hard to grow. Always willing to serve others, Jennifer helped at Full Armor, including lending a hand in the kitchen. She was a member of Red Brush Christian Church and valued her church community. A tomboy at heart, Jennifer was happiest outdoors, working with her hands, caring for animals, and enjoying the simple rewards of a life lived close to the land. Her strong work ethic, generous nature, and willingness to help others will be remembered by the many people whose lives she touched.
She is survived by her husband: Mark Starwalt of Kinmundy; her children: Malachi Starwalt and Mallory Starwalt, both of Kinmundy; her parents: Mark and Wanda Byers of Xenia; a brother: Jason (Ellen) Byers of Xenia; mother- and father-in-law: Harry and Judy Starwalt of Toledo; brother-in-law: Eric (Kim) Starwalt of Toledo; sisters-in-law: Sherrie (Russ) Rennels of Altamont, Janette (Greg) Maroon of Beloit, Wisconsin, and Christina (Gary) Collinsworth of Mattoon; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in passing by her paternal grandparents: Merle and Dale Byers; maternal grandparents: Everette and Ethel Jennings; step-grandmother: Bonnie Byers; great-grandparents: Dale and Cleone Pulliam and Harold and Nellie Byers; and grandparents-in-law: Hugh and Murna Starwalt and Roy and Della “Grandma Chicken” Figgins.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Red Brush Christian Church in Louisville with Gene Birch officiating. Interment will follow in Oskaloosa Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday at the church. Arrangements are by Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Memorial donations are suggested to the family for an education fund for the benefit of Jennifer’s children, and these will be accepted through the funeral home.
