Louis G. “Lou” Buennemeyer (86) of Effingham

Louis G. “Lou” Buennemeyer, Jr., 86 of Effingham, passed away Monday, July 6, 2026 at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, July 10, 2026 at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday at the funeral home with a 6:30 pm Elks service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Effingham American Legion Post 120 Honor Guard or the Illinois Elks Children’s Care Corporation.
Lou was born on May 26, 1940, in Effingham, the son of Louis Sr. and Lucille (Hutmacher) Buennemeyer. On February 28, 1978, he married Mary Yoho. Together, they proudly owned and operated The Green Lantern restaurant, where they became well known for serving what many considered the best prime rib around. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army, spending time stationed in Germany. A proud veteran and devoted member of his community, Lou was an active member of the Effingham American Legion Post #120 and the Effingham Elks B.P.O.E. #1016. He was also a member of the Effingham Knights of Columbus, the DAV Club, and a life member of the Illinois Licensed Beverage Association.
Lou is survived by his wife, Mary of Effingham; son, Jim (Ellie) of Shumway; grandsons, Matthew and Justin (Caleigh); granddaughter, Maelee (Bryce) Murphy; great-grandson, Ethan Phillips; sisters-in-law, Donna (Joe) Wagner and Nancy Lunnermann; nephews, Tom (Nessa) Rehkemper, Mike Rehkemper, Steve (Shelly) Rehkemper; Adam (Morgan) Wagner, and Brett Wagner.
Lou was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Doris Greer and Joan Dresen.
