Mary E. Broom, 89 of Effingham, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Monday, July 6, 2026 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sunday at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham. Memorial donations may be given to Sacred Heart School or to the Star Legacy Foundation.
Mary was born November 30, 1936 in Effingham, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Hoelscher) Pike. She embraced life with curiosity, creativity, and love. Mary enjoyed many years bowling in a league with dear friends and treasured the fellowship of her bunco group. She lovingly crocheted countless blankets and sweaters for her grandchildren. Mary traveled to 49 of the 50 states, as well as Canada, Mexico, and several countries throughout Europe.
Mary was a lifelong parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and served the Church & Sacred Heart School in many ways. She prayed the rosary daily and was a faithful Catholic woman. Mary found joy in life’s simple blessings and leaves behind many memories that will be treasured by all who knew her.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Jamie (Jim) Miller of Teutopolis, Sue (Arild) Hansen of Norway, and Jean (Kelly) Lockhart of Effingham; grandchildren, Ethan (Madysen) Miller, Gabrielle Miller, Emma Marie (Havard) Walaker, Karina Hansen, Aidan Lockhart, and Quinten Lockhart.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ralph (Anna Mae) Pike and Harold (Pat) Pike; great-grandson, Warryn Jax Miller; and seven half-siblings.
