The Effingham County Sheriff’s office will conduct additional traffic enforcement from October 29th, 2026 through September 30th, 2027 to help reduce crashes and save lives. The effort is supported by a federal fiscal year 2027 Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program grant administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
“This grant helps us put additional officers on the road to address behaviors that lead to serious crashes”, said Chief Deputy Travis Buhnerkempe. “We urge everyone to make safe choices behind the wheel, as our priority is getting everyone home safely.”
During this enforcement period, Deputies will focus on impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, failure to yield, disobeying traffic signals or seat belt violations.
The enforcement efforts will support programs such as “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Click It or Ticket” or “Drive High. Get a DUI”. These high-visibility campaigns combine enforcement and public awareness to encourage safer driving.
The FY27 STEP grant period runs from October 1st, 2026 through September 30th, 2027. Throughout the grant year, the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office will conduct additional enforcement, including during periods with a higher risk of serious crashes.
