During Monday’s Monthly Effingham County Board meeting, the Board unanimously approved an ordinance that would ban the sale of Kratom across the County.
The ordinance goes into effect immediately, but a 30 day grace period is provided for businesses to become compliant.
Kratom is a tropical evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. In low doses, it acts as a stimulant, increasing alertness, energy, and talkativeness, but in high doses, it acts as a opioid-like substance, causing relaxation, pain relief and calmness. It is frequently used to manage chronic pain, anxiety, or opioid withdrawal symptoms, though these uses are not FDA-approved.
