URBANA, Ill. – A federal jury returned a guilty verdict against Juan Carlos Oliva Lopez, 47, of Houston, Texas, on October 14, 2026, for possessing five kilograms or more of cocaine with intent to distribute it. Sentencing for Oliva Lopez has been scheduled for February 19, 2027, at the U.S. Courthouse in Urbana, Illinois.

Over two days of testimony, the government presented evidence to establish that, on February 19, 2024, Oliva Lopez was stopped by Illinois State Police troopers on Interstate 57 near Clifton, Illinois, as he transported 20 kilograms of cocaine from Houston, Texas. Evidence showed the cocaine was located in a suitcase underneath a bed in the semitruck driven by Oliva Lopez. Additional evidence presented at trial showed Oliva Lopez had been stopped in North Carolina nine days prior with more than $330,000 in cash, which had been hidden in a concealed compartment in a semitruck he was driving.

Oliva Lopez remains in the custody of the United States Marshal Service. At sentencing, Oliva Lopez faces statutory penalties of not less than ten years imprisonment; a fine up to $10,000,000; and at least five years of supervised release.

The case investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Illinois State Police, the Vermilion County Metropolitan Enforcement Group, and the Rowan County (North Carolina) Sheriff’s Department. Assistant United States Attorneys William J. Lynch and Rachel E. Ritzer represented the government at trial.
