Local authorities are investigating the possibility that a bomb was found in a vehicle in Effingham over the weekend.
30-year-old Cody M. Welch of Teutopolis was arrested by Effingham City Police Sunday on a charge of unlawful possession of a weapon. Effingham Police Chief Kurt Davis said authorities are still determining whether the device found is a bomb.
Davis said police made a vehicle stop and found a suspicious item in the back seat. Police contacted the Illinois Secretary of State Bomb Squad and Davis said they are examining the device. More information on the device should be available later this week.
Welch was also arrested on unrelated counts of DUI, methamphetamine possession, possession of controlled substance, and possession of ammunition by a felon. He was released but should make an initial court appearance this week.
