Effingham city police Sunday arrested a Tennessee woman after initial information indicated that a kidnapping had occurred.
Police responded at 2:20 Sunday afternoon to Golden Corral on Avenue of Mid America after receiving the kidnapping report. During the initial investigation, officers made contact with the complainant, 31-year-old Euzeniua M. Miller of Memphis, TN. Officers determined that a kidnapping had not occurred; however, circumstances uncovered during the incident warranted further action.
During a consent search of Miller’s property, officers discovered a loaded firearm, suspected fentanyl, and drug paraphernalia. The items were located within reach of a child under five years of age who was accompanying Miller.
The child was subsequently taken into protective custody to ensure the child’s safety and well-being. Miller was arrested and was taken to Effingham County Jail on charges including possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a weapon, endangering the life or health of a child, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
“While our officers determined that a kidnapping had not occurred, the circumstances they encountered during the investigation raised serious concerns for the safety and well-being of a young child,” said Chief Kurt Davis. “Our officers have a responsibility to thoroughly investigate circumstances that may place a child in danger, and they took appropriate action to address those concerns. We appreciate the diligence of our officers in following the investigation wherever it led.”
An initial court appearance will be held Tuesday, September 15, to determine eligibility for continued detention under the Pre-Trial Fairness Act.
