Effingham city police are continuing their investigation into an aggravated battery that occurred over the weekend.
The incident occurred following a physical altercation at 1:25am Saturday, when officers from the Effingham Police Department and the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office responded to Travel Centers of America at 1702 West Evergreen Avenue. Officers rendered medical attention to a victim and initiated an investigation.
The victim, whose name was not released by police, was transported by Rural Med EMS to HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, and later transferred by Air Evac to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for further treatment. Effingham Police Department said they would not be releasing any additional information regarding the victim or their medical condition.
City police say the investigation remains active, and that detectives are continuing to follow current leads and gather information related to the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We take incidents like this seriously, and our investigators will continue to pursue every available lead and diligently work to establish the facts surrounding what occurred,” stated Police Chief
Kurt Davis. “Our thoughts are with the victim, and we certainly wish them well as they recover. Our investigators will continue to vigorously pursue this case and take appropriate action based on the facts and evidence developed through the investigation.”
Information gathered through the initial investigation indicates this was an isolated incident, and police say there is no known ongoing threat to the community. The Effingham Police Department is asking anyone with information that may assist investigators to contact them.
