A local man arrested earlier this year after he barricaded himself in a residence in Effingham has been sentenced to prison.

39-year-old William R. Allen of Effingham barricaded himself in the 200 block of North 4th Street in June. The incident was related to an assault involving a machete.

One victim was discovered with minor injuries, and one minor was still located on the main floor, but officers entered the residence and were able to take the minor to safety.

Allen eventually surrendered to police officers including a Special Response Team without incident.

In court, Allen pleaded guilty to a count of aggravated battery involving use of a deadly weapon. He was sentenced to three years in prison. Once out of prison, he will complete six months of mandatory supervised release.
