As of halfway through the year, 2026 has been a good year for construction in Effingham.
11 new single-family residences have been approved, with a total value of $5,834,909. Add to that, approval was given to 11 additions or remodels of homes worth more than $813,000.
Two new multi-family residences were approved during the first half of the year, both in May, with a total value of $2,250,000. Two new single-family attached residences were approved, both in June, with a total value of $976,000.
There was a total of 31 new residential units approved in the first half of 2026.
On the commercial side, seven new projects were approved in the first half of the year, with a total value of $4,717,608. Seven commercial addition or remodeling projects were approved with a total value of $3,160,827. 10 accessory buildings were approved with a total value of $377,466.92.
Add in demolition projects and sign/pool/deck and tank projects, and projects approved during the first half of 2026 carried a total value of $19,342,437.52. 102 permits have been approved.
City officials said Flying J Truck Stop recently completed a total remodeling of their facility, and told the City that the project was completed a month and a half ahead of their goal, at least in part due to the help of the City staff.
City Economic Development Director Sasha Althoff reported that 23 projects were begun in the past year in the City-County Enterprise Zone, and said that is the best year yet for the Zone.
