Illinois State Police have identified the man involved in a shooting incident in Effingham Sunday.
He is 36-year-old Allen O. Gattino of St. Charles, Missouri.
Gattino arrived at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Effingham just before 9:30am and went inside, wishing to speak with the pastor. Church security contacted Effingham Police Department to report Gattino and to report a suspicious vehicle, reportedly stolen from Marion County.
City police and Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene and when they found Gattino was armed attempted to gain possession of the weapon. The gun discharged and Gattino was wounded. He was first taken to HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, then was airlifted to a regional hospital for additional treatment. No information is available as to Gattino’s condition. No one else was injured in the incident.
