A five-hour public hearing was held Tuesday evening on the merits of a proposed solar energy farm east of Mason.
Mason Plains LLC is proposing to construct and operate a solar energy facility on 15 acres of land along East 300th Avenue. The facility is projected to generate 3.6 megawatts of electricity.
The proponents said the plant would not only generate electricity, but stated that the development would generate additional property tax revenue.
A number of residents who live near the site are opposed to the project, contending that it would harm their way of life.
The hearing was conducted by the Effingham County Board’s Wind and Solar Committee, made up of Sandi Rich, Tim Ellis and Mike Buzzard.
At the conclusion of testimony Tuesday, the committee recessed the hearing, which will resume at 5pm on July 15.
