Those traveling across the railroad tracks in Effingham may have noticed the trains moving at slower speeds.

City Director of Public Works Jeremy Heuerman said he was told a 10MPH speed limit is in place for CN Railroad and CSX Railroad since the “diamond” at the intersection of both tracks has been damaged.

The diamond is a flat junction where two railway tracks intersect at the same crossing, creating a distinct diamond-shaped track layout. Heuerman said a new diamond is being constructed, but the trains need to slow down so they don’t cause any further damage or a derailment.

Heuerman said railroad officials would not give a timeframe on fixing the issue, but they said they are working as fast as possible.
