Work on Phase 2 of the Fayette Avenue reconstruction project will begin soon, but work in 2026 will not involve any reconstruction of the roadway.

Kristi Sandschafer is the new Program Development Engineer for IDOT District 7, headquartered in Effingham. Sandschafer succeeded Greg Jamerson, who recently retired.

Sandschafer said the next phase of the project will involve demolition of buildings that have been acquired along the south side of Fayette, stretching from Banker to Willow Streets. The work will be part of the bid letting scheduled on June 12. Sandschafer is hopeful the work will begin late this summer or early this fall. Officials for the City and State both acknowledge that utility relocation must also be completed before work on the roadway can resume.

The other thing that must be completed is further land acquisition. Sandschafer said several properties need acquired east of Willow Street, and both north and south of Fayette.

As to when we will see more reconstruction of Fayette, Sandschafer is hopeful that more can be done in 2027.
