A house in Greenup was heavily damaged by fire early Thursday morning.

Greenup firefighters were called to 300 North Mill Street, north of the downtown area, at 2:28am. The occupant of the house got out safely but left his cellphone inside so went to a local business to contact firefighters.

The fire started in the lower level of the structure and then spread into the attic. Fire crews cleared the scene about 7am. No one was injured.

Greenup firefighters got an assist from Toledo, Casey and Wade Fire Protection District firefighters, along with MABAS 54 and Greenup police. Personnel from the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office were on scene mid-morning to help determine the cause of the fire.
