Fire damaged an apartment at 308 North Oak Street in Effingham this morning.
No one was injured in the call, which occurred at 10:37am. The unit is part of a six-unit apartment complex located west of HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, and north of St. Anthony Avenue.
The fire appeared to start on the first floor rear porch area of the apartment. Effingham firefighters were able to contain the fire to the one unit. Forced entry was made into multiple apartments to ensure there were no occupants inside. The fire was out by 11am.
Effingham Fire Chief Brant Yochum said the fire was determined to be accidental, and damage is estimated at $40,000. Two occupants were displaced as a result of the fire.
The Effingham Fire Department was assisted by the Effingham Police Department, Rural Med EMS, Teutopolis Fire Protection District, Shumway Fire Protection District, and Ameren Electric.
