The new member of the Altamont City Council is a former member.

Former Altamont Mayor Larry Taylor was named to the Council to fill the last year of Tayler Polk’s term as street commissioner. Polk resigned from the Council due to other obligations.

The Council also learned that plans to move the Altamont Schuetzenfest from the fairgrounds into downtown Altamont have taken shape. The celebration will be a one-day event on Saturday, September 26. Rather than holding the celebration outside, the event will be inside The Whistlestop and Luke’s Bar and Grill.

Council members also approved a street closure for the 2026 Memorial Day Parade, sponsored by the Altamont Masonic Lodge, and scheduled for Monday, May 25. The Council also okayed the hiring of Barb Kilzer, who will become City Treasurer, and the hiring of Ashley Golden, who will become City Clerk. Current Treasurer and Clerk Sarah Stephen plans to retire at the end of the year. Ellie Buenemeyer plans to remain as Deputy City Clerk.

The Altamont Council approved a roadside fundraiser for Lions Club Tootsie Pop Day on May 2; approved a resolution for the 2026 street maintenance program; approved an ordinance regulating mobile food service establishments; approved a sanitary sewer extension on Bond Street for $19,500; approved payments to H&K Construction for concrete work at Schmidt Park and for South Point drainage gutters; and approved audit services by Clifton Larson Allen for $73,500.
