Percy Leon Followell, 66, passed away peacefully at his home on April 23, 2025, surrounded by family and loved ones.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2025 at Southside Baptist Church, Effingham with Pastor Lucas Shelley officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to service time at the church. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont is assisting the family.
Percy was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Leon “Sonny” Followell and Winnie Emma Followell, and his brother, Terry Wayne Followell.
Born on February 25, 1959, Percy was a gifted master craftsman who found joy and purpose working with his hands — building fine furniture and restoring old homes. His work revealed the natural beauty of the materials he touched, leaving behind not just craftsmanship, but a legacy of care, dedication, and love for his art.
He is survived by his beloved partner, Debra Followell; and his children, Christopher Followell, Shaylyn Thompson, Brandon (Amy) Followell, and Brett (Hannah) Followell, and six cherished grandchildren; her children, Jeremy, David (Sarah) and Thomas (Allison), and their families. He is also survived by his sisters, Marie (Jack) Stortzum, Helen Followell, Trudy (Robert) Butcher, and Tammy Jo (Buddy) Boyt, along with many extended family members and dear friends.
Percy’s life was marked by hard work, generosity, and a deep appreciation for the simple and beautiful things in life. He will be missed dearly by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know him.
