The Effingham Water Authority Board has unanimously endorsed an amendment to clear up confusion regarding the lighting of human-powered recreational vessels on the nighttime waters of Lake Sara. The amendment clarifies an EWA ordinance on the lighting of canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards, making clear that paddlers will not be bound by the more demanding multiple light / multiple level requirements that govern motorboats at night.
By way of its action last night, the EWA Board ratified the wording of a controlling state statute requiring that only a single white light be exhibited onboard any canoe, kayak, or paddleboard at night “in sufficient time to avoid collision.”
Although not binding from a legal perspective due to state legislation preemption restrictions, the EWA Board will continue to RECOMMEND the continuous lighting of all human-powered vessels on Lake Sara at night – a safety position joined by local paddlers.
