 St. Anthony Downs T-town, Altamont, South Central, Newton win, EHS Falls

Effingham St. Anthony played host to Teutopolis in high school volleyball action during Pink Out Night and sent the Wooden Shoes home with a loss in three tough sets Thursday.

The Bulldogs won the opener 25-22 but T-town fought back to take the second set 25-19. The third set went longer before St. Anthony pulled out a 27-25 tally for the victory.

Cara Hatton led St. Anthony in kills with 22. Rylee Fearday had 16 digs. Madelyn Gilmore led in assists with 27 and blocks with three. Gilmore and Colby McCormick had two aces each.

Teutopolis won the junior varsity match, 25-20, 25-27, 25-17. The two teams split freshman/sophomore contests. St. Anthony won 25-23 and T-town was a winner 27-25.

Dieterich came calling and claimed a victory over Altamont Thursday.

Dieterich won the varsity contest, 25-13, 23-25, 25-15.

Leading Altamont were Abigail Wills with seven kills and two blocks, Adilyn Schnarre with 16 assists and Lydia Aldrich with seven digs.

At Farina

South Central improved its record to 13-6 on the season with a victory over Cumberland in three sets Thursday.

The Cougars won the opening set 25-14 but Cumberland came back with a 25-23 second set. The Cougars then won the match, 25-23.

Mya Schaal led the winners with 12 kills and two blocks. River Yingst had four aces and 14 assists. Sophie Wodtka led in digs with 12.

The Cougars junior varsity also won 25-17, 25-6.

South Central will be back in action this weekend at the Webber Tournament.

At Louisville

Windsor/Stewardosn-Strasburg swept North Clay in volleyball competition Thursday.

The Hatchets won the varsity match, 25-17, 25-11 and is now 16-6 on the season and 7-0 in the National Trail Conference.

“I’m proud of the girls for keeping their composure tonight during an injury that put a new face on the floor for part of set one,” said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. “We were already missing Brooke, a senior middle hitter, due to illness. Thankfully, she returned later in the set. In set two, the girls took care of business and took the win.”

Kendra Hayes led the team with two aces, eight kills, 14 assists and 11 digs. Zaida Wascher also had 11 digs while Kenzie Thompson also had two aces.

The Hatchets also claimed the junior varsity match, 15-25, 25-22, 25-22 to improve to 11-1.

Windsor/Stew-Stras took the freshman/sophomore contest, 25-22, 25-20 and is 5-6-4.

Effingham fell to Taylorville in three varsity sets Thursday.

The Tornadoes won the opener 25-16 before EHS came back with a 25-23 tally. Taylorville won the match, 25-22.

EHS dropped to 11-10 on the season. Camdyn Burgholzer led in kills with eight, aces with three, assists with nine and digs with six. Macy Kirk had six digs and three aces while Hannah Fouts had three aces. Mara Braun led in blocks with five.

In the junior varsity match, Taylorville was a 25-14, 25-14 winners. EHS dropped to 6-8.

Newton captured victories in freshman/sophomore and varsity action Thursday evening.

The Eagles won the varsity contest, 25-12, 25-15 and is 20-2 on the season.

Stanley led in assists with 20 and blocks with two while Schumacher had six aces, Thomann seven kills and Hermann four digs.

The Eagles were winners in the freshman/sophomore contest, 25-12, 25-14.

In junior varsity action, Robinson won 25-22, 10-25, 16-14.

Newton is back in action Saturday in a freshman/sophomore tournament at Teutopolis against Effingham at 8:30 a.m. and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg at 9:30.
