This game went down to the wire as Effingham St. Anthony scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 5-4 victory over Altamont in high school baseball competition Monday.
Altamont moved ahead 1-0 in the opening inning and led 3-1 in the second. Altamont tacked on another run in the fifth to lead 4-1.
But here came St. Anthony. The Bulldogs scored two in the sixth to pull within 4-3 and then tallied two more in the bottom of the seventh to claim the win.
Both teams had nine hits. Altamont committed five errors.
A single by Blake Berg pushed Altamont into a 1-0 first inning lead. A single by Zaine Miller extended that lead to 3-0 in the top of the second.
Connor Storm claimed the pitching win for St. Anthony. He came on in relief of Blake Verdeyen in the fourth and went four innings. He allowed four hits, one walk and struck out two. Verdeyen went the four innings giving up three runs on five hits, one walk while striking out seven.
Alex Mayer led the Bulldogs with a single and double while Quentin Stephens had two singles and two RBI and Will Vonderheide three singles. Freddie Jansen added two RBI.
Altamont was led by Blake Berg with two singles, a double and an RBI. Zaine Miller added two singles and two RBI and Kale Davis two singles.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City played host to Brownstown/St. Elmo and sent the visitors home with a 4-2 loss Monday.
CHBC finished with seven hits and was aided by three BSE errors. Hardimon had two singles and a triple while Kircher had two singles and an RBI and Wells a double.
Brownstown/St. Elmo was led in hitting by Calvin Voelker with two hits and an RBI. BSE dropped to 9-9 on the season and returns to action today against South Central at 4 p.m.

Neoga claimed a 10-4 victory over Woodlawn in action Monday.
Cayden Hakman picked up the pitching win.
Neoga had eight hits in the contest led by Evan Fearday, Braylon Sparrow and Cal Lanham with two each.

At Strasburg
Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg captured an 11-1 victory over South Central Monday.
The Hatchets moved into a 4-0 opening inning lead then tacked on another run in the second. South Central scored its lone run in the fifth.
Windsor/Stew-Stras then ended the game with three in the fifth and three in the sixth.
South Central was led in hitting by Colton Tockstein with two singles and an RBI. The Cougars drop to 9-10 on the season.
At Louisville
North Clay edged Wayne City by a 4-3 count Monday.
The Cardinals improve to 7-10 on the season and return to action today at Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in a 4 p.m. contest.
