Gary Dean Schmid was born on December 16, 1945, in Vandalia, Illinois, one of three children born to Victor Wayne and Verna Julia (Rethorn) Schmid. Gary married the love of his life, Roberta Marie Bell, and together they built a beautiful life centered on family, faith, devotion, and hard work. They were blessed with a daughter and a son and shared nearly 62 wonderful years of marriage. Gary passed away just two days before they would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary—a remarkable testament to a lifetime of love, commitment, and partnership. A humble man with a wonderfully goofy sense of humor, Gary found great satisfaction in working with his hands. He truly enjoyed his work and dedicated much of his life to his trade. A self-employed mechanic, Gary owned and operated Gary’s Auto & Truck Repair, where he specialized in transmission work. His mechanical talents extended beyond the shop, as he also had a special fondness for Oliver tractors and enjoyed spending time working on them. Gary was a devoted and faithful member of Augsburg Immanuel Lutheran Church. His faith was an important part of his life, and he was also a member of the Fayette County Farm Bureau.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Roberta Schmid of Shobonier; daughter, Tracy and husband Todd Duckwitz of Hickory, North Carolina; grandson, Zachary Schmid and wife Hannah of Hickory, NC; along with extended family members and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Verna Schmid; son, Mark Alan Schmid; brother, Gregory Schmid; and sister, Vicky Schmid.
