Mildred C. Carlen, 98, of Toledo, Illinois passed away at 10:39 p.m. on Monday August 31, 2026, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon.
Visitation will be from 10:00 to 12:00 noon on Saturday September 5, 2026, at the Salem United Methodist Church in Toledo. Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon. Burial will follow in the Toledo Cemetery. The Barkley Funeral Chapel in Toledo is assisting the family.
Mildred was born on April 4, 1928, in Greenup to Ivan and Paralee (Bowman) Shupe. She married Robert Carlen on May 5, 1950.
She is survived by her son Dean (Sharon) Carlen; daughters Nancy (Jeff) McElravy and Julie (Rick) Hunt; grandchildren, Jodee Carlen-Adams, David (Angie) Carlen, Josh (DeDe) McElravy, Jay (Rayna) McElravy, Carly (Payton) Baker, Joe (Caila) Hunt; step-grandchildren Jeff (Cindy) Light, Joni Neidigh (Walt), Greg (Debora) Light, Doug (Nicki) Light; great-grandchildren Olivia Carlen, Derrik Carlen, Samantha (Brad) Strohl, Kody (Camryn) Carlen, Elijah McElravy, Madelyn McElravy, Katie McElravy, Luke McElravy, Tate McElravy, Maddox McElravy, Hudson McElravy, Lelle Karrick, Lorelei Karrick; great-great-grandchildren Kyndall, Stetson, Rowan, Gracie, Ross, Charlie, Ann, Eli, Michael, Haidansc, James, Semaj, Angel, Aiden, and Savior; 8 step grandchildren; and 14 step great-grandchildren.
Mildred is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob, and brother Doyle Shupe.
Mildred was a homemaker, and a secretary for Everhart & Everhart for several years and then spent years as the legal secretary for Cutright Law office in Toledo. She was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church. She was in the domestic science club in Toledo and Business Professional Women. Mildred very rarely ever missed any of her grandkids’ sporting events over the years.
