 Effingham Finishes In Draw, T-town Falls To Mattoon In Charleston Red & Gold Soccer Tournament

CHARLESTON — Effingham and Teutopolis competed in opening round play at the Charleston Red & Gold Soccer Tournament Wednesday.

Effingham fought to a 3-3 draw against Mattoon.

“Brady Wilson put in a tremendous effort with 12 saves,” said EHS Coach Logan Arney. “Gage Kinder put in two goals, with one being an impressive header coming from an assist by Jake Niebrugge. Niebrugge also finished a penalty kick. Luis Sarmiento assisted Gage’s first goal.”

The Hearts play a doubleheader today against Champaign St. Thomas More and Newton.

Teutopolis opened play at the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Mattoon.

Mattoon scored at 31:15 in the first half and claimed a second goal at 52:42 in the second half.

The Wooden Shoes had four shots on goal. Isaiah Lee finished with 10 keeper saves.

The Shoes return to action today against Champaign St. Thomas More at 5:45 p.m.
