 St. Anthony Strikes Early, Hands Teutopolis 8-6 Baseball Loss

Effingham St. Anthony struck early and then held off a rally by Teutopolis for an 8-6 high school baseball victory Wednesday in a game head on 979XFM.

Teutopolis did move into a 2-0 opening inning lead. Andy Lustig led off the frame by drawing a walk and stole second. With one out, Aiden Niemerg singled. Eric Weidner then grounded out, scoring Lustig. Michael Habing followed with a double that scored Niemerg.

But the Bulldogs came back in the bottom of the frame. Curtis Tingley singled to start the inning. He was thrown out going to third when Alex Mayer doubled. Blake Verdeyen followed with a single. Johnny Gannaway singled and drove in two runs. He took second on a wild pitch and came home on a single by Freddie Jansen.

The Shoes went up and down in the second. St. Anthony put runners on in the second but couldn’t bring them home.

St. Anthony pushed its lead to 7-2 in the fourth. Mayer was hit by a pitch. Verdeyen reached on an error. Gannaway singled to load the bases. Chase Dorris drew a walk that scored Mayer. Freddie Jansen singled home a run and Quentin Stephens grounded out but another run scored.

The Shoes then tallied two runs in the fifth. With two outs, Weidner was hit by a pitch. Habing then followed with a home run and the Shoes had moved within 7-4.

St. Anthony tacked on its final run in the fifth. Will Vonderheide led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. With two outs, Verdeyen singled Vonderheide home and the Bulldogs led 8-4.

T-town then tallied two more runs in the sixth. Hayden Tebbe led off the frame with a single. Jake Kocher was hit by a pitch and Kendall Mette singled. Andy Lustig drew a walk. With one out, Niemerg hit a sacrifice fly that scored a run.

But that’s where the scoring ended for the Shoes.

Jansen picked up the pitching win for the Bulldogs. He went 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on one hit, one walk while striking out seven.

St. Anthony improved to 2-0 on the season while T-town dropped to 1-1.
