Marie Helen Mader, 101, of Green Creek, IL, passed away on August 20, 2026 at her son Mark Mader’s home in San Antonio, TX.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Green Creek, rural Effingham, IL, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026, at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham, IL with a 6:30 p.m. rosary and family eulogy.

Marie was born on August 15, 1925, in Effingham, IL the daughter of Herman and Rose Doedtman. Marie married Harold Mader in 1950 and moved to Cottonwood, Idaho. She spent 8 years in Idaho, working and enjoying the beautiful scenery, until she was called back to Effingham, IL to care for her ailing parents.
Marie was a Godly woman, who served the Lord every day in prayer. Marie lived most of her life in Effingham, IL, enjoying crocheting, quilting, square dancing, sewing, baking, playing cards, and the company of her family and friends on her iconic front porch. She loved her St. Louis Cardinals and could often be found listening to their games. With an impeccable memory, she was often visited by friends and family revered as the resident history teacher, discussing family lineage, past events and recalling life stories. She will be remembered for her quilts, her cookies, and her ability to make you feel at home. Although she will be greatly missed by all, we take comfort that she is in the presence of our Lord now, Psalm 23:6, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever”.
Marie is survived by her son, Mark Wilfred Mader (Roberta); daughter-in-law, Nancy Edwards (Rick); grandchildren, Charlotte Huffman (John), Mark Wilfred Mader II (Savannah), Anastasia Rosario, Christopher McQuay, Emily Mader (Dan), Sarah Hoeck (Raphael), Marcus Mader (Erin), and Danielle Grzenia (Doug); and great-grandchildren, Noah, Harper, Jacob, Emmanuel, Aurelia, Benecio, Brennan, Caleb, Sophia, Amelie, Miles, Liam, Elsa, and Rowan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold Mader; brother, Paul Doedtman; sister, Loretta Schlanser; son, Jim Mader; and grandson, Matthew Mader.
