EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — It came down to one goal and that one goal went to Spain as it secured a second World Cup Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Argentina.
The goal came from Ferran Torres in the second period of extra time. He side-footed the ball into the net after Nico Williams header came to him.
Spain claimed control of the ball most of the match. Argentina’s first shot didn’t come until the 115th minute.
Spain, the reigning European champions, only allowed a single goal in eight matches and that was against Belgium in the quarterfinals.
Argentina’s Lionel Messi, the 39-year-old who recorded eight goals and four assists during the World Cup, said this was his last World Cup.
With Messi, Argentina had competed in the last four World Cups.
