Gary Joe Sholders, 82, of Greenup, Illinois passed away on July 8, 2026, at Cumberland Rehab and Nursing Home in Greenup.
A Celebration of Life service will be on July 18, 2026 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Greenup Municipal Building. Military Rites will be accorded at 2:00 by the Cumberland County Veterans.
Gary was born on August 12, 1943 in Robinson, IL to Malcom and Gertrude (Jackson) Sholders. Gary graduated from Casey High School in 1961, went into the Army, and married his loving wife Jean Decker all within two weeks.
He is survived by his wife Jean of 65 years; daughter Crystal O’Dell; son Kelly Sholders; sister Linda Hale; grandsons Johnny O’Dell, Matt O’Dell, Luke (Christina) O’Dell, and Marcus O’Dell; a
precious great granddaughter Emmy who he thought the world of; and so many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Greg Sholders; son-in-law John O’Dell; and infant daughter Lisa Kay Sholders.
Gary was an engineer for IDOT in Paris, IL for 30 plus years. He loved to go to truck-ins (camping) and loved to travel. He and Jean went to all 50 states and went to the 50th state (Hawaii) on their 50th wedding anniversary.
Gary will be sadly missed by his wife, children, and all who knew him.
