 Two Effingham Singles Players, Teutopolis Doubles Team Advance To State Tennis Tournament

ROBINSON — Two Effingham singles players and a Teutopolis doubles team will be headed to the State Tennis Tournament Thursday, Friday and Saturday, hosted by Palatine High School after the players finished in the top four at the Robinson Sectional.

Olney was the team champion of the sectional with 20 points followed by Effingham 19, Casey-Westfield 17, Teutopoils 16, Flora 14, Effingham St. Anthony 6, Mount Carmel 4, Robinson 2 and Newton 0.

Advancing in singles play were Effingham’s Rece Kinney, a junior, and Cannon Bockhorn, a senior, along with Olney, Richland County’s Carter Seaman, a junior and AJ Padilla, a junior.

In doubles action, T-town’s Derek Schmidt, a senior, and Tommy Habing, a sophomore, advanced along with Flora’s Kyler Dennis, a senior and Luke Powless, a sophomore and Casey-Westfield’s Alex Hancock and Kellen Sullivan, both seniors, and Wade Winnett and Gavin Ridge, also both seniors.

In singles play, Effingham’s Rece Kinney had a first round bye. He defeated Jack Mumford, 6-0, 6-0 then won over Xavier Schumacher of Teutopolis, 6-1, 6-3. He downed AJ Padilla of Olney, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Kinney then faced Carter Seaman for the championship and lost 6-1, 6-2 to finish second.

Effingham’s Cannon Bockhorn had a first round bye, then blanked Flora’s Gabriel Calherois, 6-0, 6-0. He downed Grayson Schmidt of Teutopolis, 6-0, 6-0. Bockhorn then fell to Olney’s Carter Seaman, 6-0, 6-2.

St. Anthony’s Charlie Bierman had a first round bye. He then fell to Carter Seaman of Olney, Richland County, 6-1, 6-1.

The Bulldogs’ Charlie Hiatt won over Tyler Spiker of Newton, 6-0, 6-0 then fell to Mount Carmel’s Isaiah Courter, 6-3, 7-6 (4).

T-town’s Grayson Schmidt had a first round bye, then downed Kahlin Michl of Newton, 7-5, 6-2. Schmidt lost to Effingham’s Bockhorn, 6-0, 6-0.

The Wooden Shoes’ Xavier Schumacher had a first round bye, then won over Mateli Iuhasz of Flora, 7-6 (3), 6-4. Schumacher then lost to Kinney of Effingham.

Newton’s Kahlin Michl had a first round bye, then lost to Schmidt of T-town. Tyler Spiker opened play with a 2-0, 2-0 default to St. Anthony’s Hiatt.

In doubles action, Payne Davidson and Eli Weber won their opener over Flora’s Kyler Dennis and Luke Powless, 6-0, 6-2. The pair then defeated Noah Jones and Coles Jones of Effingham 6-1, 6-1. The pair then fell to a Flora doubles team, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 to finish second.

Effingham’s Noah Jones and Coles Jones had a first round bye then defeated R. Spiker and M. Shamhart of Newton, 6-1, 6-1 before falling to K. Dennis and L. Powless of Flora, 6-4, 6-2.

Newton’s Ryan Spiker and Michael Shamhart had a first round bye then lost to N. Jones and C. Jones of Effingham, 6-2, 6-1.

St. Anthony’s Jackson Schultz and Drake Brown had a first round bye. The pair then defeated L. Herrman and J. Klingler of Olney, 6-1, 6-1. But the pair fell to SW Winnett and G. Ridge of Casey-Westfield, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (6).

The Bulldogs’ Mason Jones and Max Gillenwater fell the openning round to a Flora pair, 6-2, 6-3.

Effingham’s Joel Flack and Brady Wilson had a first round bye then lost to T. Walton and K. Anderson-Wisenewski of Robinson, 6-4, 6-1.

Newton’s AJ Pitcher and Gabrriel Maldonado of Newton and T-town’s Derek Schmidt and Tommy Habing, both had first round byes.

The duos then met in the second round as Schmidt and T. Habing won 6-0, 6-0. T-town’s duo then defeated Olney’s O. Buchanan and M. Celada, 6-1, 6-3 before downing K. Sullivan and A. Hancock of Casey-Westfield, 7-6 (3-6), 6-1.

The Wooden Shoes pair then faced K. Dennis and L. Powless of Flora in the championship and lost, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 to finish second.
