 Numerous Athletes Qualify For Class 1A State Boys Track Meet

NEWTON — Numerous area athletes qualified for the Class 1A State Boys Track Meet at the Newton Sectional Wednesday.

Cumberland was the team champion of the sectional with 110 points followed by Flora 102.5, Newton 98, Vandalia 51, Teutopolis 50, Casey-Westfield 42, Robinson 39, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 36, Neoga 35, Effingham St. Anthony 34, Altamont 20, Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville 18, Red Hill (Bridgeport) 11, Marshall 11, Dieterich 10, Lawrenceville 10, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 9.5 and Brownstown 5.

Cumberland’s Reid Carlen took second in the 100 in 11.38 seconds and was third in the 200 in 22.78 seconds and will advance in both events to State.

Also going for Cumberland is Cameron Roedl in the 1600 after taking second in 4:35.68.

Newton’s Matthew Haskett won the 400 in 51.12 seconds while teammate Henry Will was second in 51.97 and both advance. Hayden Borgic will head to State in the 800 after winning in 2:00.10.

Dieterich’s Trevor Crutcher won the 1600 in 4:34.23 minutes and also claimed the 3200 in 9:44.97 to advance.

Along with Crutcher, four other area competitors advanced in the 3200 and those included August Cosart (CHBC), second in 9:56.01; Cameron Roedl (Cumberland) third in 9:58.84, St. Anthony’s Oliver Kreke fourth in 9:59.76 and Camden Bloemer fifth in 10:00.52.

Two area players advanced in the 110 hurdles and three in the 300 hurdles. In the 110 hurdles, Karson Zerrusen of Teutopolis took second in 15.03 sec and St. Anthony’s Eli Hiatt was fourth in 16.02.

In the 300 hurdles, Hiatt won in 40.0 seconds; while T-town’s Zerrusen was second in 40.53 and Cumberland’s Logan Gerhardt was third in 42.01.

The Newton 4×100 relay team of Eli Wolf, Brock Anderson, Quincy Fulton and Dexter Fulton advanced after taking second in 44.32 seconds.

The Eagles also advance in the 4×400 relay after winning in 3:29.72 minutes. Those team members include Henry Will, Matthew Haskett, Hayden Borgic and Parker Harris.

The 4×800 relay saw two teams heading to State. Cumberland’s Colby Roedl, Kaleb Bierman, Aydan Oakley and Gavin Whitaker took first in 8:33.22 and Neoga’s Brett Matusas, Jayton Hanfland, Tate Christner and Damien Chardon took second in 8:38.12.

In field events, Altamont’s Brock Wendling won the shot with a throw of 14.55 meters.

Cumberland’s Isaac Venatta took the discus victory with a throw of 48.72 meters. Reed Miller finished second in the triple jump at 12.10 meters. Landon Finn was second in the long jump at 6.23 meters to head to State.

In the high jump, Neoga’s Brayden Ray was second with a leap of 1.88 meters.

T-town’s Brant Niebrugge won the pole vault at 4.00 meters and teammate Isaiah Lee was second at 3.85 meters. Both advance to State.

Area competitors will head to the Class 1A State Track Met held Thursday through Saturday, May 28-30 at Eastern Illinois University.
