 Effingham Beats BMD, Teutopolis Blanks Shelbyville, Newton Wins On Senior Night In Softball Action

BREESE — Effingham moved into a 2-0 opening inning lead. They tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth and finished strong with nine runs in the seventh for a 13-5 high school softball victory over Breese Mater Dei Monday.

The Hearts’ bats were alive as the team finished with 15. Three seemed to be the magic number and four players ended with three hits each.

Natalie Armstrong hit two singles, a home run and ended with three RBI while Ryley Engel had two singles, a double and five RBI. Sydney Cunningham had two singles, a double and an RBI and Maci Hayes three singles and an RBI. Molly Maxedon added a single and an RBI, Keagyn Koenig a double and Gieah Schlanser finished with an RBI.

Armstrong went all seven innings on the mound. She gave up five runs on nine hits, walked four and struck out two.

At Teutopolis

Chloe Hoene hit a walk-off grand slam to end this game in the fifth inning by the 10-run rule. Teutopolis blanked Shelbyville, 12-0.

The Shoes held a 4-0 lead in the second and tacked on three more in the third before the grand slam ended the game.

T-town’s Alyssa Tipton tossed a one-hitter, allowing two walks and striking out four. Jersey Gaddis came on to finish the final two innings. She did not allow a hit, did not give up a walk and struck out four.

Meanwhile, the Shoes had 13 hits that included two home runs. Hoene finished with a double, home run and four RBI while Malea Helmink had a single, home run and two RBI. Kera Hartke added a single, two doubles and led in RBI with five. Lauren Shue ended with a single, double and an RBI while Kylie Borries had three singles.

At Newton

Newton celebrated Senior Night with a 6-2 win over Lawrenceville Monday.

The Eagles moved into a 2-0 lead in the first inning. But Lawrenceville came back to tie in the second. Newton then scored single runs in the second and third and two in the sixth.

Audria Reich had two doubles for the Eagles. Jacee Dhom had a double and two RBI while Jorjia Reich added a double. Lexie Ghast ended with a single and an RBI and Hydi Bierman finished with an RBI.

Karly Deckard went five innings for the pitching win. She gave up two runs on three hits, three walks and struck out two.

At Newton
