North Clay High School captured a victory over St. Elmo/Brownstown in softball action Wednesday.
The Cardinals went eight innings to pull out a 9-8 win.
North Clay improved to 1-7 in the National Trail Conference, 4-13 overall. The Cardinals return to action Friday against Altamont in the opening round of the National Trail Conference Tournament at 4;15 p.m.
At Marshall
Cumberland suffered a rare loss, this one to Marshall by a 16-3 tally in five innings Wednesday.
Marshall ran out to a 5-0 opening inning lead, tacked on a single run in the second, six in the third and four in the fourth behind a 10-hit attack.
The Pirates had five hits but finished with four errors.
Shelby Kingery led the way in hitting with a double and an RBI. Jude Miller chipped in with two singles while Ava Long had a single and an RBI.
Marshall was led by Klaire York with a single, home run and five RBI, McKenzie Davis with a double and four RBI, Lynn Welborn with a single, double and an RBI, Kyla Gustafson with a double and an RBI and Mollie Kent with a double.
Avery Cornwell tossed the five-hitter. She did not give up a walk and struck out four. Marshall is now 18-1 on the season.
Cumberland dropped to 14-9 on the season and will now face South Central (10-5) today at 4;30 p.m.
