 Teutopolis Bounces St. Anthony 12-3 In High School Baseball

The scoring occurred in the later innings as Teutopolis bounced Effingham St. Anthony to the tune of 12-3 Tuesday.

St. Anthony’s Henry Brent singled in the second but was out on a fielder’s choice and the Bulldogs couldn’t bring the runner home.

The first four innings, the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie. T-town had the best scoring opportunity in the third and fourth innings. The Shoes’ Michael Habing drew a walk in the third and stole second. Davin Worman also drew a walk. Habing reached third but was left stranded.

In the fourth, T-town’s Austin Borries drew a walk. With two outs, Caleb Deters and Teagan Pals had back-to-back singles to load the bases. But the Shoes couldn’t get a runner home.

T-town then produced two runs to move ahead in the fifth. With one out, Worman singled followed by a single off the bat of Aiden Niemerg. A ground out by Bryce Niebrugge produced an RBI and Borries followed with a double, scoring the second run.

Teutopolis then pushed its lead to 7-0 in the sixth. Deters singled to open the frame. With one out, Habing drew a walk, Andy Lustig then singled. With two outs. Aiden Niemerg singled home a run. The Bulldogs then changed pitchers.

Jason Kreke drew a walk and Borries followed with a double that produced three RBI and the lead stood at 7-0.

St. Anthony finally broke loose with three runs in the sixth. Ben McDonald led off with a single. Curtis Tingley followed with a double. Blake Verdeyen singled home a run. A wild pitch brought Tingley home and Verdeyen took second. Alex Mayer hit a single scoring another run and the Bulldogs had pulled within 7-3.

But the Wooden Shoes socked this game totally away, scoring five more runs in the seventh. Deters opened the frame with a single. With one out, Habing drew his third walk of the game. Lustig followed with his second single. Worman singled home a run. With two outs, Kreke hit a home run and when the dust had cleared, the Shoes led 12-3 and that’s where the scoring ended as St. Anthony went up and down in order in the seventh.

The Shoes finished with 13 hits led by Borries with a single, two doubles and four RBI and Kreke with a home run and five RBI.

T-town improved to 14-4 on the season while St. Anthony dropped to 10-4.

The Shoes host Mount Zion Thursday in a 4:30 p.m. contest while St. Anthony doesn’t return to action until Friday when the Bulldogs will play host to Charleston, also at 4:30 p.m.
