MATTOON — Mattoon pushed into a 2-0 opening inning lead against Newton but couldn’t hold on as the Eagles came back and finished with an 18-14 high school baseball victory Saturday.
Newton had a seven-run second inning, then scored five more in the third for a 12-8 lead. The Eagles added on another run in the sixth. Mattoon tallied six more in the bottom of the sixth to pull ahead 14-13. That’s when Newton got back on the scoring track with five more runs for the victory.
The Eagles had 15 hits in the contest led by Quincy Fulton with a single, double, home run and six RBI, David Ferguson with a single, two triples and five RBI, Gavin Meinhart with two singles, two doubles and an RBI and Drake Wolf with a single, double and two RBI.
Chance Mulvey picked up the pitching victory. He went one inning, giving up two runs on one hit, two walks and striking out two.

At Farina
North Clay won the South Central Wooden Bat Tournament Saturday.
North Clay beat Woodlawn 16-3 then came back to blank Flora 10-0. The Cardinals finished out with an 11-0 win over South Central.
At Champaign
Champaign Central edged Effingham in high school baseball action Saturday.
The Hearts fell by a 10-9 count. Central edged out to a 1-0 lead but EHS came back to move ahead 2-1 in the top of the second. Central regained control with two runs in the bottom of the second then pushed that lead to 9-2 after scoring three in the fourth and three more in the fifth innings.
EHS made another comeback bid, scoring two in the sixth on a home run to right field by Westin Hayes.
The Hearts then scored five runs on three hits in the top of the seventh inning to tie the score at 9-9. An error scored one run and Hayes singled, scoring a second run. Andrew Wagoner doubled scoring two runs and stole home and the Hearts tied the score.
But Champaign Central came back to tally the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Effingham finished with 11 hits led by Hayes with two singles, a home run and four RBI and Andrew Wagoner with three singles, a double and three RBI and Carter Braddy with a single and double. James Wendt added a double.

At Tolono Unity
Sacred Heart Griffin tallied an 8-3 victory over Teutopolis in Saturday play at the Tolono Unity Round Robin.
T-town held a 2-0 opening inning lead. Sacred Heart Griffin came back with six runs in the top of the third. T-town tallied a single run in the bottom of the third. Sacred Heart Griffin then scored two more in the sixth.
The Wooden Shoes had five hits led by Austin Borries with a single, double and two RBI and Davin Worman with a double.
In the second game, Tolono Unity edged T-town, 7-6 behind a 10-hit attack.
The Wooden Shoes finished with eight hits led by Jason Kreke with a single, home run and two RBI, Gavin Addis with a single, triple and an RBI, Caleb Deters with a double and an RBI and Borries and Teagan Pals with a single and an RBI each.
In the first game of freshman/sophomore doubleheader, Edwardsville was a 12-9 winner.
Both teams had nine hits. T-town was led by Luke Niebrugge with two singles and two RBI and O. Lynch with three singles.
In the second game, T-town trounced Edwardsville, 16-3 in five innings.
T-town had 11 hits led by O. Lynch with two singles and three RBI, A. Grunloh with a single, double and two RBI, E. Weidner with two singles and two RBI, B. Niemerg and D. Drees with two singles and an RBI, L. Niebrugge with a single and two RBI and B. Schumacher with an RBI.
Teutopolis played at Busch Stadium Sunday against Pawnee.
Junior Nolan Schumacher ripped a hit off the Pawnee pitcher driving in Austin Borries. Coach Justin Fleener sent Borries home and he slide in as the Shoes won 10-5.
