Mattoon Fire Department was dispatched to the area of 27th and Commercial for a residential structure fire Thursday.
On arrival at 12:56 P.M crews found a 1-1/2 story wood frame single family residence with heavy smoke showing and fire showing in the back of the residence. Mattoon Fire Chief Jeff Hilligoss said this residence is known to be vacant with squatters coming and going on a pretty consistent basis. Mattoon Police were trying to locate a female that is known to frequent this residence for a well being check.
Fire crews made an aggressive interior attack and search of the residence. Two 1-¾” hose lines were deployed to attack the fire, while an additional crew made entry through a second story window to search the upstairs space. The fire was brought under control within about 15-20 minutes. It was found that the fire had extended to the second floor behind the knee walls. Crews then began overhaul to search for any hidden fire in these walls. No occupants were found inside the residence.
Hilligoss said this fire is considered suspicious in nature by fire department investigators. The Office of the State Fire Marshal Arson Investigation was called in to investigate the cause and origin of this fire. Mattoon Police began assisting with the investigation and at last report have a suspect in custody that has admitted to setting this fire. This investigation is currently still ongoing.
The Mattoon Fire Department was assisted at this scene by: Coles/Moultrie 911 (CECOM), Mattoon Police, Charleston Fire Department, Mitchell-Jerdan Ambulance, and Ameren electric.
Mattoon Fire would like to give a huge shoutout to Mattoon Police Department for their dedication and hard work on this investigation and the quick apprehension of a suspect who admitted to starting this fire. Hilligoss said, “It truly is an honor and privilege to work along side such dedicated individuals who work hard to keep our city safe.”
