Mattoon Authorities Investigating Suspicious Fire Sunday Morning

Mattoon authorities are investigating a suspicious house fire that occurred early Sunday morning.

Firefighters were dispatched to 2513 Dewitt at 3:38am and arrived four minutes later to find the structure at the location fully involved in fire. Mattoon Fire Chief Jeff Hilligoss said this was an abandoned structure, and Ameren confirmed that the residence has not had power or gas service for some time.

A department investigator began a cause and origin investigation and determined that the fire is suspicious in nature. Mattoon police have joined the investigation.

There were no injuries reported at the incident. All units cleared the scene at 6:12am.

Mattoon fire were assisted at the scene by Coles/Moultrie 911, Mattoon police, Charleston fire, Mattoon public works, and Ameren gas and electric.
