Mack Thompson’s tenure as boys varsity basketball coach and athletic director at Effingham High School has come to an end.
In a Facebook post, Thompson shared that due to Effingham Unit #40 making budget cuts, the Board directed that Unit #40 go back to one athletic director. Vince Rohr has been serving as the junior high athletic director. Thompson posted that there are no other positions within his qualifications to move into in the district, so “our family will be on the move come Summer 2026.”
The school board is meeting Monday evening, so more should be known following the meeting. Unit #40 Superintendent Andrew Johnson didn’t comment when contacted about the situation Friday morning.
Thompson said he let his immediate family know of the situation earlier this week and told the basketball team following their awards event on Wednesday.
Thompson just completed his second season at Effingham. He came to Effingham for the AD’s position after a lengthy tenure at Robinson, but after a search for a coach didn’t bear fruit, Thompson was given the coaching position, too.
