Howell Paving has announced plans to celebrate its 75th anniversary with an open house on Saturday, April 11. The event will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn in Mattoon.

Howell Asphalt Company was founded in 1951 by Virgil Howell. During and after the World War II construction boom, Virgil was working for a construction company building military facilities when he recognized the growing need for asphalt contractors throughout the region. His vision and commitment to quality workmanship laid the foundation for decades of longevity and growth.

In 1969, after completing his service in the U.S. Air Force, Virgil’s son-in-law and daughter, Charlie and Linda Adams, moved to Mattoon. Charles joined Bill Leitch and Ken Ozier at the business and helped expand the company’s reach while continuing its commitment to excellence. In 1977, Howell Paving, Inc. was officially formed and reorganized into the company as it stands today.

Under Charlie’s leadership, the company experienced significant growth, including the purchase of General Contractors, Inc. in 1998, the acquisition of Wabash Asphalt Company, and the founding of Prosser Construction Company in 1997. Holly Adams, Virgil’s granddaughter, joined Howell in 1996 and now leads the company as a third-generation owner, guiding its continued growth as a major infrastructure firm in Central Illinois.

“It’s difficult to put into words what this milestone means to our team and our family,” President Holly Adams said. “For 75 years, our success has been built on hard work, trusted partnerships, and a commitment to serving the communities where we live and work. I’m incredibly honored to lead a third-generation company that has supported the growth and infrastructure of our region for more than seven decades.”

As of 2026, the company operates six asphalt plants and maintains offices in Mattoon, Salem, and Shelbyville. Howell Paving specializes in asphalt and concrete paving, bridge rehabilitation, and site preparation for projects ranging from parking lots to interstates.

All current and former employees are invited to attend the open house and share memories of their time with Howell.

“This celebration belongs to the employees, past and present, whose dedication and craftsmanship built this company,” Adams said. “We’re proud of our history, but we’re even more excited about the next 75 years. Looking forward, we are steadfastly committed to innovation, safety, and strengthening the infrastructure that supports our region’s future.”
